Business Networking Tip – Be Open For Business

Business Networking in GroupsHave you ever been to a business networking event and felt you couldn’t engage in a conversation?  You walk around and there are groups clustered close together leaving you standing there like a wall flower. Dr. Ivan Misner, author of Networking Like a Pro: Turning Contacts into Connections, recently told a group of entrepreneurs, to be aware of groups that are open or closed.  It may be a group of 2, 3, or 4.  If toes and shoulders are pointed inward, no one else will feel comfortable joining the conversation.

Look for groups with bodies pointed in an open position.  They are more likely to be friendly and welcoming.

If you are in a group conversation, always leave the door open for others to join in, otherwise they may get the impression that you are part of a clique.

Many times people are assigned to welcome new members to a group such as Ambassadors or guest hosts.  If you find a closed group, you may want to attempt to open it up to introduce a new guest or member.

At a business networking function, the point is to meet a number of quality connections. This is not possible if groups are closed for long periods of time.  If you want a longer conversation with someone, schedule a coffee or meal meeting, and use your networking time to meet people you haven’t met before.

Pity the poor networker standing alone by themselves. Make an attempt to connect with them and be sure to introduce them to someone else before you go on to mingle.  They will appreciate your thoughtfulness.

For many, networking is an excruciating exercise.  Make it easier by being open and friendly.
